What is a puppy mill? A puppy mill is a mass dog breeding establishment that
produces puppies for profit by selling them wholesale to the pet industry or
to each naive individual consumer. Most puppy mill owners sell the dogs
wholesale to brokers, who in turn, sell them primarily to pet stores. The
harsh conditions due to lack of proper shelter, insufficient food and water,
uncleanliness, and overcrowding often fester disease ridden starving animals
whose only purpose is to breed. Often times the bitches are destroyed as
early as 6 yrs of age as they can no longer produce puppies , therefore, are
no longer an asset. These unfortunate animals are haphazardly bred with no
regard to breed standard, genetic diseases or temperament. Their offspring
will often suffer the same consequences. Puppy mills thrive on
consumer ignorance. Consumer education, public awareness and stronger
legislation may someday impact the productivity of these cruel mills. AKC
papers are simply a registration number. It does not guarantee the health
of the puppy. Do your part...do not patronize pet stores that sell
puppies and kittens. A responsible breeder will NOT sell
their animals to pet stores. These animals are prisoners of greed and bred from
misery. Research for a reputable breeder in searching for a puppy
or a kitten.
