Dudley

Dudleys story is a very sad one.  He was found stray laying on the side of the road apparently hit by a car. Noone claimed him and he was in danger of being put to sleep at the shelter because of such severe injuries.  Dudley suffered fractured ribs, a fractured pelvic bone and a complete break of the femur bone.  NEPR was contacted and he was brought into the program.  He was believed to be Pekingese however he resembles more of a Pomeranian mix. Nevertheless, we could not turn our backs on him.  Dudley was immediately taken to the vet for surgery.  Two plates were placed in his leg so his femur bone will (hopefully) fuse.  We are still waiting to see if the surgery was successful.  He will need to keep the plates in his leg until late January.  We are hoping the surgery works so Dudley may keep his leg.  Since coming into rescue his ribs and pelvis have healed.  He has a long way to full recovery.  Despite the trauma in Dudleys life, he is a happy live the moment type of pup (but is very camera shy).  Please consider sponsoring Dudley? UPDATE 3/8/2007 :

Since Dudley's operation of having two plates stabilize a broken femur bone, we have good news.  We had hoped that the plates would allow his bone to heal completely, unfortunately, because he did not receive immediate care at the shelter, the bone is not calcifying on both sides.  The plates will have to remain in his leg.  The good news is that he does not have to go through amputation!  He leads a very normal life and is happy go lucky.  At any speed, he has balance and seems to have adjusted very well.

UPDATE 12/7/2007:

Dudley was doing very well but took a turn for the worse. In November, Dudley lost use of his back legs. The vet stated that he has no deep pain sensation. NEPR is investigating the purchase of a dog cart so that Dudley will experience some freedom. Since paralysis, he has had several UTI's from not having sensation to relieve himself. His last prognosis is that he will never walk again. Please consider sponsoring Dudley so that he can have as normal a life as possible.

Any donation that you can send for Dudleys care would be appreciated as the bill totalled over $1000.

Meet Taffy!

Taffy came into rescue two years ago in Oct. 2003. Her 90 year old
neighbor could no longer stand to see her chained outside in all kinds of
weather with no food or water. She called the local SPCA. They
removed Taffy from this very abusive situation and took her to a local
shelter. She was checked out by a Veterinarian, who recommended she
be put down due to her age (she was 11 years old) and her many health
problems. Fortunately the shelter called NEPR and our then President
rushed to rescue her. Taffy weighted 7 lb. She was so matted she could
not turn her head and her tail was matted to both of her back legs. That
evening she was bathed, clipped, fed and given a whole lot of love.
Taffy was safe at last!

Taffy has serious heart problems. She takes Enalapril and Salix twice a
day and Lanoxin once a day. She also takes Potassium Gluconate once
a day because of the diuretics she is on. She saw a cardiologist this fall
for an ultra sound and will continue to need one every six months. He
added the Enalapril at that time. She takes a glucosamine supplement
for the arthritis in her hips. Itīs such a pleasure to see her run now,
especially for her meals. Taffy has gained 5 lb. since she came to live
with me in February of 2004 and this is even with her missing most of
her upper teeth. Taffy also has an on going skin problem, which I can
only assume came from all of the years of being left outside in the dirt.
She periodically needs an antibiotic to clear up the sores that appear on
her stomach and chest. She also must be bathed with an Antiseptic
Shampoo because on the skin problems. Her left front leg is deformed.
She was probably born that way according to the Vet. Taffy has
obviously been a mother many times.

Taffy is now 13 years olds. The last 2 years of her life have been very
good to her. I adore her and hope she will remain healthy for many more
years. She can with the help of her Drīs, her medications and lots of
love. Maybe you can help too with a special donation for all of our
special need Pekingese.
